EDF 6 / Earth Defense Force 6 - Things that suck

Master of all sucks - Air Raider. Heartbreaking disappointment. He's not fun to play on the vast majority of missions. Period.


Sandlot wants the Air Raider to be a stupid version of the Ranger, shooting things. Air Raider was awesome for being the most different class, why ruin it?


Most Air Raider main missions drones (under level 99) suck and they're only good for brain-dead Inferno runs. You can't simply walk around shooting most of the stupid drones without a ton of armor. You'll notice that 95%+ of the good EDF players don't use them on Inferno, except when they have no choice or the very few usual ones that don't suck.

The bigger proof that they suck is that Sandlot totally overpowered most drones in DLCs, so that they would become useful and some people would use them. This wouldn't be necessary otherwise wouldn't it?


Air Raider is no longer the support class. One of the most amazing aspects of the Air Raider was its ability to have a mostly or total support loadout to help NPCs or teammates online, or even offline. That is gone, as he can now only have ONE support item. It killed one of the most interesting things on 5 which was doing no shooting runs, using only support items and NPCs.

And let's not even talk about how many now suck to use. And Ranger can take 3...

Class overlapping. It started on 5, when Ranger got vehicles, and Fencer could fly better than the Wing Diver. In 6, Ranger gets many Air Raider traits, making the distinction between the 2 classes blur. Will AR disappear in 7? Will it be an even more stupid copy of the Ranger? Likely Ranger will fly and dash faster than WD and Fencer...

4.1, although basic by 5 and 6 standards, did have a strong distinction between all classes and their roles.



The number of weapon crates that drop in most missions is miserable. Health crates are not much better. The game seems geared towards brain-dead gameplay (farm armor, shoot around, not even learn the game), and you'll get sheer tons of armor crates for that goal.



Weapons grinding sucks even more than in EDF 5 and I thought that it was impossible. Due to the miserable number of weapon crates most missions provide, getting weapon upgrades is a nightmare.

And surprise, surprise it can be worse, and it is! In DLC missions new enemies drop absolutely deplorable quantities of crates. It's not unusual to play DLC missions and receive 0 weapon crates, and 3 or fewer are common. Way to go Sandlot, thank you!!!!



Headshots no longer provide twice the loot, so zero incentive to go for that extra mile. This was an interesting idea, why remove it.



Lots of missions but so many are repetitive ones, especially from 5. More than 1/3 of the missions are repetitions and repetitions of repetitions. Boring!



Lots of scripted missions, they're boring as hell, and playing in japanese for now makes this worse.



Overall, the number of interesting and cool missions is smaller than in EDF 5, which is even worse considering the fact that there a lot more missions in 6 than in 5.



Missions with the new overpowered enemy (Siren / Glaucus), which although impressive, are a bore to play as it's mostly sheer random luck to finish or not.



Most backpack items take forever to reload.



Some backpack items for Air Raider and Ranger are finicky to install and use, particularly CA bombs, decoys and shields. You use the same key to install and activate / destroy (terrible idea) and many times the game is unresponsive and will not do what you want or need. This is more troublesome as mission difficulty progresses because a bad issue at the wrong time can usually mean the mission end. It's unbelievable they did not try this, so Sandlot just did not care.



Fencer jumps boost has been nerfed and now he falls like a brick. Even more stupid that it can be almost canceled by shooting a short-range weapon after the jump, like the Spine Driver. What's the point of this idiotic, almost 4.1 like retrograde choice I can't see the point. Nice idea Sandlot...



The Air Raider and Ranger tanks and other wheeled vehicles make some of the most stupid and ridiculous actions, usually flying half the map away or getting stuck in the ground or environment, by just touching some rubble or sometimes even by exiting the vehicle in some otherwise unremarkable spot. This is RIDICULOUS! It's a tank, isn't it?



Ranger keeps getting poisoned gifts from AR, as was expected turrets now mostly suck as you have to use them immediately when installing them. Although they can be made to work, this killed one of the most fun things with the Air Raider and turrets, strategies that would involve advanced placement of them. Using explosive shot turrets is a lot more dangerous for obvious reasons. The same thing happened with Epsilon Railgun in EDF 5 from 4.1, it was nerfed.



You can't summon vehicles, satellites or air attacks in "future or present" missions. This is so stupid since you have always been able to spontaneously generate Depth Crawlers, and you can do that everywhere now, so why not do that too to at least the other vehicles? Only DC's come in jelly or pudding packages, and they don't even need water or milk added (or AR has some magic piss that generates DCs from special beans 😂🤣)?



Although the improvements to NPCs have been great, it's a pity to see how easily NPC Wing Divers, mostly, but sometimes other clases, get stuck on stupid places in the environment. This is sad and infuriating because you can be making a good effort to have a fun run with your companionship and then it gets trashed by the usual problem, the captain of the quad gets stuck, and every NPC team mate member gets crushed with it. An easy mission to see this happen is 126, unless you destroy most buildings this will be a sure occurrence.



Humor is sadly mostly gone. One of the best things about 4.1 was the stupid lines and jingles. These were less common on 5, and on 6 they're almost absent. Thank the wonderful "story" for this.



If you want a good story read a book. A good one preferably, or a good series. Some movies have good stories, but not all, but the media is different that was predictable.

EDF is an action game. It has a pseudo-goofy plot that is fun, but the stellar part was always the fantastic gameplay. Sadly EDF 6 has gameplay driven by story and it hurts the game a lot. I could never understand why people ask for a story on these games. If you want stories then play adventure games. If you want character customization, play RPGs. Even worse when one of the characters is ruined to adapt to a story, when the opposite way was the correct one to go. If the story breaks a character, change it.
