EDF 5 - Guide, Air Raider's road to Inferno's end - Part 2 Missions 1-90

The mission strategy page was getting too long, split it in parts so that it would be easier to manage.

Mission 90 - Broken Land

I did this mission on hard with the Naegling to farm drops from Deroy legs and make them almost harmless. On inferno that is very hard. The mission can be easily be solved by using a powerful gunship attack that will mostly destroy deroys in one shot (105mm Rapid-fire Cannon Z is a good one, Vulcan can miss due to buildings), ZEXR and a good Nix to survive.
But as I was writing this I thought if this couldn't be solved in a messy total war run and after all it can. Using your reliable Phobos and the sometimes very useful Electromagnetic Wall it can be done without many issues. Nix ZC will help in teasing Deroys due to attack power and armor. The always reliable ZEXR will cover your ass, and the NPCs one, while you're playing with the deroys. The max deroys I was able to piss or destroy at once was 9, of the 11 that are on the map. The 11 at the same time would be hell as there's 2 missile deroys and these are a pain as you'll have the map full with their missiles.
And even the frail Naegling can do it too...

Mission 89 - Flying-type Extermination

There are 2 ways to do this mission. The fast and the slow ones. Either has risks. Everything in this mission is tied to how much health the hive has, as passing certain thresholds will trigger a wave. The danger is always advancing the mission too fast which will trigger several tough waves at almost the same time and things can get REALLY hairy. I'll only detail the waves in the slow way.

It's very important to roll, dash or fly IMMEDIATELY to the front right when the mission starts to capture the WD squad. This isn't that difficult to achieve and it will give you more control of the mission, as the WDs will be the first ones to start the fight if they advance. It's crucial for the slow version too.

Fast version requires Combat Bomber KM6 Plan Z4, Guard Post M3 and Life Vendor ZD, the last 2 reasonably to full upgraded. For vehicle, Nix ZC provides the easiest life.
Capture WDs and both ranger squads, follow left Nix. When Nix's starts shooting install Guard Post, preferably in a way it covers both Nixs. Stall the game until you can get a Nix ZC, don't use KM6 for now. You can either use now a Life Vendor or leave them all for the end.
When you have the Nix, start using KM6 on the hive. The first big wave of bees is easier to kill, they spawn in the hole in the hive middle right, shoulder howitzer helps in that. As you use KM6 a voice will say a giant bee is coming. Turn around and align Nix's feet to the giant bee. Exit Nix and use KM6, as the bomber attack will be done from your current position and direction you're looking if you don't choose a destination area. When the giant bee is gone turn around, the next step will be when 2 anchors drop, one on each side of the hive. Keep sending KM6s all the time when you can, replenish Life Vendor and Guard Post (you should have 5 of the first and 3 of the second, so take this into consideration and how long they will last, Guard Post can be rebuilt but there's no time for that).
When anchors drop turn Nix feet to left anchor, exit, use KM6. Turn to the other anchor, repeat. Anchors should go down with one KM6 Z4 attack. As you continue to use KM6 you'll hear a message that a giant bee is coming, it will be from the front right, roughly where the right anchor was. Another large wave of bees can spawn from the hive after this, so keep using KM6 on the hive until it goes down, which will also kill many bees. If you want to pick crates leave the last giant bee alive. As long as you keep moving it's no big deal as most stings will miss, but try to pick all health crates for the NPCs
Of course it's also important to get more Nixs when you can. It will probably lead to some failures but it works.

Slow version requires Combat Bomber KM6 Plan Z4, Guard Post M3 and ZEXR, the last 2 reasonably to full upgraded. For vehicle, Nix ZC provides the easiest life.
The most important for this version is the waves of enemies that will appear that are related to the nest health. In order:
- bees, red and normal from the hole just right up from middle of hive (easy to use shoulder howitzer to kill most of them)
- giant bee + bees coming from the back
- bees, red and normal from the hole near the bottom left down of hive
- 2 anchor, both dropping drones, left one also spiders, right one red ants
- giant bee coming from right back, roughly position of right anchor + bees from all over the map
- bees, red and normal from the hive
Between all these waves bees will stop coming from hive to you if you don't attack them after the last ones that were aggroed are killed. At most 1 or 2 stray bees will show up, NPCs will take some time but will kill them. However some of the Rangers have rockets, they can inadvertently summon a group of bees, thankfully it will be a small one.
There are a few VERY important things to notice:
- after the third wave, when the next one will be the 2 anchors it's highly advisable to use the shoulder howitzer to destroy the hive, because if you use KM6 Plan Z4 you won't have it when anchors drop and it will take some time to get it
it's EXTREMELY important to check and be sideways or in an oblique angle so that the hive is not hit inadvertently while you're using Z4 to kill bees, I lost a few times by doing that mistake in the 5th wave, and you'll have in a snap more than 100 bees around you. And the queen. So turn the Nix feet reasonably away from the hive (but not 180 degrees...). Remember Bombers will be sent in the direction you're if just called immediately without positioning, by just exiting Nix, calling bomber and enter again quickly.
- if you have 1k armor or less staying outside the Nix with bees it's a gamble, you can die in a sec, so avoid it. NPCs have more health and last longer than you.
- using the shoulder howitzer is really dangerous when there are bees around, the chance you'll hit a passing one is high and you'll wipe out almost all NPCs as the cannon blast is big and they can't survive a 10k hit.

From start roll, capture the 3 squads, follow NPC Nixs, install  ZEXRs when the shooting starts to help them. Fall back to the road near the canyon which was left from your start. I stayed just after the cliff to the left of the road starts, and there's a small path to go down to the canyon. The cliff to the right gave some protection and you have a clear view of the hive. Install next ZEXR for stray bees. All going well you should have the Nix shortly. If bees settle down before you have it use KM6 on the hive. If you have the Nix do the same, but it's safer.
Before using KM6 always install 3 ZEXR turrets in front of you and another to the left side of the Nix near you, install Guard Post(s) When you use KM6 the first large wave of bees will spawn. If you have the Nix try to use shoulder cannon on the spawning point, hole almost top right. Whatever happens it's likely the NPC Nixs and the Tanks that will arrive are wiped out. From this point on all enemies will focus on you. Kill everything, rebuild ZEXRs reinstall them, but just this time put 3 behind the Nix and the last one on the same position, as the next wave of bees + giant one will come from your back.
Use KM6 on hive. Giant bee will come, you can use KM6 if you position it towards the giant one but it's dangerous, revolver is usually enough to kill the big one and smaller ones too. Use the cannon on the big one if you're sure no issues can arise (kill NPCs...).
When it's quiet rebuild ZEXRs, Guard Posts, install, etc. Use again KM6 on hive, another wave of reds and normal bees.
When it's quiet rebuild ZEXRs, Guard Posts, install, etc. Now DON'T use KM6. Next wave is the 2 anchors you want KM6 ready to use on them. Start using cannon from nix on hive. Refrain for activating ZEXR. When the message says and anchors drop, exit Nix, activate ZEXRs and use KM6 on left side anchor. It's important to put the marker over just half or slightly more of the anchor towards outside, that is not the hive side. This is important to avoid hitting also the hive which will trigger the new wave. Don't worry the anchor will blow anyway. This will refill KM6 again use on the other anchor, remember you'll have to do the same, hit it towards the outside. Kill all enemies, there will be drones, spiders and red ants besides bees.
When it's quiet rebuild ZEXRs, Guard Posts, install, etc. Now DON'T use KM6. The reason now is that a KM6 attack can trigger the next 2 waves simultaneously (I did that twice...). So again use Nix cannon, activate ZEXRs, kill all small bees.
Now 2 options. Either you want to pick crates, you should not kill giant bee. She'll probably be over the cliff to your right it will likely not hit you and NPCs.
If you don't care about crates, kill giant bee, rebuild, install, use KM6 on hive, hive will die, last bees wave will come, abuse the KM6 as now it's safe.
If you care about crates and the giant bee is in a harmless position, rebuild everything, install, use KM6 on hive, hive will die, abuse KM6 on bees, and walk around dragging the giant one picking crates when almost all small bees are dead, just as I did in the fast version recording.

A nice deatiled description for the TL;DR people 😋😊

Mission 88 - Threads Everywhere

This one can be almost a joke. Just capture the NPCs for minimal protection, and Phobos Z the road ahead, until you get to center and do the same to the 4 anchors. Vesta can be used6, keeps the road /burning for sometime. ZEX Launcher 1 to front, 1 to left and 1 to right, to level down buildings and clear view a bit more while killing the very few stray small fish. Naegling will help in the total laziness, so you don't even have to move to finish mission as you'll be able to kill the wandering Retiarius (oops Araneas) from your starting spot.
It will be just more boring waiting for some small fish to rebuild Phobos if necessary.

Plenty of ways of solving this one, you can probably figure out one even easier.

Mission 87 - Approaching Monster Balls

Largely known to be exploitable (go right along the river, hide in rocks to right of waterfall, use any non explosives weapon to kill pill bugs), but it's also easy to do even with hard class weapons.

Mission 86 - Secret in the Dark

I did wrote in one of the pages of the blog that the AR had much improved weaponry to handle cave missions. However he can only take advantage of them if he has bottleneck points. This is a open cave mission so it's not easy at all to him.
You can't do this mission with the AR without reasonable to good control of the Depth Crawler, likely including wall climbing and some ceiling travel.
Due to how complex the cave is, it's very easy to get killed by a single stupid ant or similar enemy. The radar map doesn't help a lot here, due to the complexity and varying height of the terrain, you're never sure where the nearest enemies really are. You have some NPCs but they'll die pretty fast, and on this mission you can't have them join you

Mission 85 - Incoming Larvae

A relatively easy mission that the only difficulty is to survive until you have a exoskeleton.

Mission 84 - City of Giant Pylons

A extremely easy mission. A few giant anchors, but enemies will be in standby mode once they spawn again, soit's just a matter of handling one by one. Pick NPCs, fill back. The level 43 Heavy Bomber Phobos Plan 4 is enough to level down the area and kill small stuff, bring Vulcan or similar to destroy anchors, ZEXR to kill the enemies and a Nix or anything to just hop inside and probably kill a very few stray enemies. Only drones will annoy you for sometime.

Mission 83 - Defeat Archelus

This mission is easy, as long as you don't almost use the Barga 😂. Bring ZEXR to handle the small stuff wave, then Vulcan or similar to damage Archelus, possibly a Bulge Laser too or whatever you want to try (no, Tempests are a bad idea here). A good exoskeleton that you'll be able to summon once the small stuff is gone.
Barga is slow as molasses, Archelus keeps running away if you're unlucky. So get rid of him using your own weapons and it will be fine and faster.

Mission 82 - Reclaiming Base 228: Retreat

Like 83 this mission is easy, as long as you don't almost use the Barga 😂. Bring ZEXR to handle the small stuff waves, Phobos to massacre Colonists and help with Cosmos, Guard Gun is good for keeping exoskeleton alive. Either Red Guard or Nix ZC, the first if you want to pick weapon crates.
Hide in Barga when necessary until exoskeleton shows up. Use beginning to install ZEXRs for later, while the Barga is activated and enemies are in standby. Activate ZEXRs when the first wave of ants shows up. Both ant waves will likely eat Barga if you do the mission with him alone. In the end focus on laser cosmonaut and everything will be fine.

Mission 81 - Reclaiming Base 228: Stage 3

This is a scripted mission and it's not hard with the right gear. On each wave you can actually let all NPCs die, they will respawn at wave end. Bring FZ-GUN MX and ZEXR. Third weapon can be ZEX Launcher, but it's dangerous, ZERA-GUN works too. Depth Crawler IV.
It's crucial to advance rapidly before the scripted NPCs so that you can install the flame turrets on the walls just next to the closed doors (2 on each side, 3 on one if you have 5), and the ZEXRs on the floor (all on the floor just before the door). Activate them all once the doors open. If you have the ZEX Launchers, throw them inside the  room AFTER the doors open (it will surely massacre the NPCs too). Summon DC when possible, use it to kill stray enemies that manage to exit room.
For wave 2 (pill bugs) and wave 4 (red ants, spiders, colonist and cosmonaut) only approach doors when you have rebuilt what you need, so that the script wait for you.
In the ramp after 1st room, use DC or ZEXR to kill pill bugs. If you use ZEXR, rebuild them fast.
Do the same as 1st room for third wave.
For 4th wave, don't install any turrets, throw them to the distance when door opens and activate. When everything is mostly dead, don't advance too much to avoid triggering wave 5.
Wave 5 will be pill bugs coming from back, and spiders from below. install flame turrets in the long tunnel where wave 4 was. If necessary use exoskeleton in room 3 to help with pill bugs. Install ZEXR in the tunnel going down to kill spiders.
Wave 6 will be after another door, use the same strategy with turrets on door sides and floor. On this one door will seem to be broken but it will work.
Wave 7 is another door. Use same technique, but do expect your NPCs to die on this one and a bunch of ants and cosmos survive and go afer you. Either use DC or exoskeleton from room 3 to help.
Finito, but likely not much time to pick crates from last room, unless you keep one of the cosmos alive, which will be better to do with the exoskeleton.

Mission 73 - Light Defenses

I really wasn't seeing the light for a easy solution for this one. In the end I checked the wiki and the obvious was there. You need to take the Red Guard for its speed and more importantly the Guard Assist Gun G which will help your Nix last while you go anchor hunting.
Bring ZEXR, capture NPCs and use ZEXRs while falling back to collect points for the Nix. When Nix has arrived, shoot Guard Gun to feet. Optional, if ZEXRs are available, or want to wait for them, install 2 in the Nix legs and activate them. Your first goal is to go inside the labyrinth of shields and destroy the spiders anchor at front, then deal with the other spiders one in back and finally the bees one. This will destroy the spawns for almost all troublesome enemies. Then recover and summon new Nix.
Repeat procedure and destroy the shield bearer at the center that is protecting the oversized anchor and destroy oversized anchor using Nix or a third weapon (bulge laser, gunship attack).
Deal with the isolated black ants anchor, then all the shields that are alone. Finish the last black ants anchor, leave the red ones as the final as reds won't do much damage to your Nix.
Hopefully the rangers are almost all still alive, so that the ones equipped with rockets can help clear the landscape to help with crate picking.

Mission 60 - Mountain Investigation

Mission 58 - Hidden Threat

Ouch! A mission completely in thick fog, with just a few moments of some visibility. It's not easy at all. I couldn't figure out the pattern of the less foggy moments, so you can't even rely on that. Anyway, it's a really good idea like night missions.
There are roughly 90 enemies on the map (10 of them silver spiders). When they're down to 70, you get a middle deroy, another when their number drops to 50, and 3 more when there's just 30, with one of these a nice missiles one 😑.
This is the city map of mission 108 (more destroyed there) and 85 among others. You start roughly near the start position of 85.
I decided to go with full attack mode, so I brought Phobos Z 4, Phobos 4, ZEXR and Naegling XEM. ZEXR is mostly useless here, as you can't really stay quiet, and there are too many structures around, so I changed to ZEX Launcher, which is always dangerous and you definitely want to get as away from it as much as possible for he sake of your and yours WD NPCs health. KM6FX and the second highest Phobos are also useless, as they only have a narrow hit area and deroys especially move very fast, so by the time the attack arrives it will certainly hit zilch. Phobos 4 may be a hard level weapon, but reasonably upgraded can still kill normal spiders in inferno, but even better will destroy deroy leg segments.
I started by dropping 2 ZEX to front, capturing WDs and rolling left. When I reached next intersection, you'll have a small open area to the left, dropped last 2 ZEX Launchers I had. Then started to Phobos the area where enemies are, which is reasonably easy since the Phobos marker will help to locate it, this while moving back to map border.
You'll get several Phobos refills, I used them all, which always meant that I got the 5 deroys in a row 😂. You should try to use Phobos on deroys when you can to help reduce their attack power, or with some more luck destroy them. When you get XEM destroy all deroy segments you can, and hopefully also hit silver spiders. Then drive back along with the map towards the right from start and then up when you reach its end. The biggest issue will be the missile deroy as this one is usually the rightmost one from the start so it will be the last one you'll hit. The most troublesome part is getting a new XEM due to the dreadful option now that you can only summon it to the heat of the action.
In the end, you'll have a few remaining Araneas and spiders in the middle. Still took me around 10 tries to achieve this. There's still luck involved.
I also did it with the NixZC, but stayed with this one in the border map area after dropping the last ZEX
launcher. Also works, but hitting the Deroys with the cannon shoulder or machine gun is not easy at all. The missiles are slow as hell but help a bit too.
In both cases you must rely on WDs to kill silver spiders, as you can't handle both the deroys and silvers at the same time. But I should probably not be must and handle it more easily, By killing at least the 2 first deroys before asking for the last 3.
It's a fun mission and I don't think that anyone except a full mobile fencer can have a easy life on this one, using missiles across the map.
Doing this mission with weapons below level 78 which are the ones you could get on mission 57 would be peachy... Nix ZC, Naegling XEM, Phobos Z, ZEXR are all beyond that range. 😋
Publishing videos of this mission is really useful... 🤣

Mission 53 - The Army Group Raid

If you want to try the robot toys this is the mission to do it. Robot Bomb DZ or a very upgraded Robot Bomb Type D (both damage and range) is fun to use, but it's only viable in a easy level like this one. Even so be careful not to piss more than 3 enemies at once, be aware of the Robot Bomb blast area as enemies can go near you and bring a Blacker for its speed as a escape plan (or a powerful exoskeleton, speedy probably better due to area needed to cover). Gunships will be much more effective, or a bulge laser. Spritefall is not a good option for powerful enemies in Inferno.

Mission 52 - Underground Trap

This mission with weapon limits on is very hard. Well it's still hard without them.
With weapon limits you're limited to level 75. At that level only decent turrets are ZERA-GUN, FZ-GUN MD and ZEX Launcher. The mission is a lot easier with the ZEXR-GUN, FZ-GUN MX and ZEX Launcher, but still problematic. Depth Crawler is mostly irrelevant as it has a minor role.
All tunnels have enemies, except a small one that you can see in the attached video, it's roughly in your back left.
Pick your NPCs and head there, this must be done in a snap without failures and always rolling. I had to find specific drop locations and order to make it work with weapon limits. At first you must focus on the extremity where you enter the safe spot as gold ants will come that way, then you must focus on the other one as silver spiders will come from that end. However this is unreliable, and you can still get all kinds of enemies from both ends. There's only 2 FZ-GUN MD, so you need one on each end. You need to be focused on when to rebuild the ZERA, as you need it ready when ZEX Launcher ends.
ZEX Launcher is extremely dangerous to you and NPCs. You can expect to die roughly half the times from it. It's important to try to launch it as far as possible towards the other caves, to try to avoid these issues, so if necessary take some risks to throw them.
Of course you can always have bad luck and the turrets will land in a enemy or corpse and they will be gone in a snap.

Mission 51 - Attacking the Fleet

Another Archelus pays a visit mission, a not that easy one. There's a very important change mid mission that I detail in missions data.
I did bring Phobos 4, which is almost useless except for levelling down the area, as the transports block its effects. 150mm Cannon D, but 190mm Cannon will also work, just with a really long reload. ZEXR for bees and general killing, you need the 150mm and Phobos so that the area has few structures or these won't be even remotely effective. A Red Nix.
Level what you can at start but avoid the 2 or 3 big items between the NPCs and the bees transport, don't capture NPCs. Keep destroying the area in front of you so you can attack and kill the red ants. Do this until you can summon the Nix. Use ZEXRs when bees come, reload them as soon as all bees are killed. Be aware bees are dangerous for a still AR, keep moving.
When you have Nix, put 2 ZEXRs on each side of it, leave 2 near NPCs (don't capture them), destroy nearest bees transport, turning on ZEXRs just before reaching it.
Level the area near NPCs more.
Continue attacking red ants in the back front, until you have at least another Red Nix (I would suggest 2). Use ZEXRs if more bees come from the remaining transport that has them. When you have 2 more Nixes, install all ZEXRs near NPCs and destroy the leftmost transport that had red ants.
Archelus will come, and the last bee's wave will come too. Retreat to NPCs, capture them and activate ZEXRs. Now using Nix make Archelus go away. ZEXRs will probably handle the last bees, and all you'll have is red ants from now on which are easy to handle with a flamer nix and don't do much to damage to them.
All NPCs will certainly die in this phase, but they'll recover once Archelus is gone and there's no red ants. Killing the remaining 2 red ants transports is a joke, compared to the rest of the mission.
You'll never make it if any of the 2 remaining transports when Archelus arrives will drop bees, as handling them and Archelus is hell.
No crappy limpet needed 😋

Mission 50 - Airborne Fighters: Part 2

The fun way to do this mission is with the Naegling. However it's no piece of cake. Only the XEM is able to do reasonable damage to the Deroys, which is a weapon beyond what you could get in this mission, but with the level 65 one you'll get nowhere.

Mission 47 - Survivors

This is not a totally easy mission. There's 30 Cosmonauts, 4 of them with shotguns. That's 11 more than in hard. They're all in a small area of the map, so it's very difficult to get just the attention of one group and it's highly likely that a few more will come. It's not unusual for half of them to come and then it's hell. A Blacker will be really nice to escape around the map edges due to speed, and its cannon can be useful too. If you want to use weapons within the mission range 105mm Rapid-fire Cannon and Vulcan Cannon M1 will work, but most times won't kill cosmos in one attack.
From start, wait a little, then gather the nearest NPCs to use as bait, from front right and then doing a arc to the left (Rangers, WDs, Fencers, Rangers, Rangers). Unfortunately they will likely piss some cosmos and the dance will begin sooner than you want.
There's a group of rangers on the far left that have rocket launchers, you should leave this guys to their own problems.

Mission 44 - Culling the Flying-Type

A really hard one. 4 waves of bees, with the second and third having 120 of them, 30 red ones in the third. The 4th wave has a giant bee, not a red thankfully.
It's the only mission where there will be Naegling NPCs, 2 of them along with 2 exoskeletons. The problem with these 4 NPCs is that they do the worst thing with flying enemies: stay put. So, they're massacred in a snap. If they're alive by the 3rd wave it's truly fantastic. Be aware that all classes face death shortly after all the NPCs are wiped out, unless there's just a few bees left (REALLY very few, and yes it can include the giant one which is the least of your troubles).
Decoys can help, if you have time to insert them in a nice place before the next wave comes and you must know where they're coming (see mission data page). ZERA even fully upgraded is a joke here, it will kill 10 bees with some luck. Only ZEXR will work, which is a high end weapon for this mission, ZEX Launcher is within limits but due to the huge number of bees it's a bad idea as you'll likely help to wipe out the NPCs even faster, and you too. KM6s are the most useful weapons here. Spritefalls don't work as bees are too much spread and over the NPCs and you.
Naegling isn't viable, once the bees come to you it's wiped out in a snap. Or worse you just need 1 or 2 stray bees to wipe it out (but managed to do this mission once with it).
On EDF 5 everything is too fast, specially wave transitions, and it's unlikely you can breath between them, let alone plan quietly things for the next wave. Rebuild times for most weapons are not realistic to use on this one.
I've done it with some loadouts but none is peachy. If I find a stellar one that makes this a walk in the park I'll post.

Mission 41 - Assaulting the Outpost

This one seems daunting but it's not. Can easily be done with Nix Red Armor, ZERA-GUN, Spritefall Power Mode and Vulcan Cannon M1 or 105mm Rapid-fire Cannon Y. These are all weapons below level 70, within the range you could get by reaching this mission.
At start capture both ranger squads, then hide right behind the first buildings, proceeding forward. When NPC Titans and exoskeletons are within the outpost range, start killing frogs with Vulcan and hitting cannons in the outpost with Spritefall. Spritefall will penetrate outpost and hit batteries and cannons below the hull.
When you have the nix, there are 3 other squads to capture around the outpost: Rangers with sarge to right, WDS in the back and fencers to the left. Outpost will walk later to the right so starting in this side is probably a good idea (not what I did 😁).

There's good detail of the outpost here:

https://www.gematsu.com/2017/10/earth-defense-force-5-details-aranea-giant-outpost-enemies

Prioritize taking down all the batteries, especially the ones above that have missile pods on their sides and the red rays smaller cannons. Vulcan or 105mm will hit anything protruding from the outpost. Spritefall will hit everything. Use both extensively to destroy everything you can. They're spread around the outpost.

The outpost will eventually get up. When it does prioritize urgently green small cannons under it. Use Spritefall on them. These will damage extensively you and NPCs. Cannister shots from the Red also work but take more time and it's more difficult. Ants and drones will be a good source of points, kill them with flamer, machine gun and ZERAs

Use ZERA to help reduce numbers of drones and ants. Pick all health crates possible.

When you destroyed all the cannons above and under the outpost, follow it, use fresh ZERA and hit orange center when it's opened. Try to do this in an area without buildings to be easier. Eventually, some colonists will also drop and they will be easy to massacre as they show up with the Red flamer and machine gun.

Rinse and repeat until the outpost goes down.

An impressive mission, the outpost is really well done.

Using more powerful weapons this mission is a lot easier of course.

Mission 40 - Brutal Battlefield

Mission 39 - Current Headquarters

What an absolute, royal, giant PITA to do this mission with weapon limits. Be prepared, it takes 45 mins to 1 hour... if all goes well.
I did it with the same loadout as 41, Nix Red Armor, ZERA-GUN, Spritefall Power Mode and Vulcan Cannon M1. Just the ZEXR would make this gigantically easier. The Nix ZC would be awesome too. But being stubborn as a mule I decided to go the hard way.
It's going to be long...
First problem. You have 8 transports, 2 with juicy silver spiders, 1 with purple ants which are thankfully toys compared to the silvers. The problem is when 4 transports are down you get a bonus of 50 bees plus 5 red ones. Which will be located around the areas where the silver spider transports are. Nice eh?
Second problem, There are a ton of drones, 80 to be exact. Well not A ton but you don't want them all at the same time, so reducing their numbers a few at a time is a smart option.
Third problem. There are 18 frogs. 8 of them with plasma cannons. These will hit you from across the map. They also have a weird behavior in this mission, as they attack in squads, in a different way from most missions. If you want to know more check the japanese wiki:

OK, plan. First thing you want to get rid of is all 18 frogs before downing ANY transport. So piss with Vulcan the drones that are more advanced. Use ZERA to help kill the ones that follow. Keep doing this until you can't get any near drones. This should not be enough for the Nix. Next step is killing the spiders from the nearest leftmost transport, using Vulcan and ZERA. Always rebuild ZERA of course...
When you have a Nix, should be safe to deal with frogs. Start with the red ones, the shotgun ones. They'll come in squads, but with some luck just 3 or 4 at a time. They're far enough for you to be able to kill them with Vulcan while the ZERA and NPC rangers deal with likely spiders and drones.
The most delicate part will be to deal with the 2 groups of plasma green frogs that will be near the silver spiders transports. They're too far to use the Vulcan, you'll likely to have to resort to the Spritefall (at least my Vulcan couldn't even get near, it never changed to red meaning that it had range). Spritefall hits a large area, so you can be sure besides the frogs, silvers will come too (and normal spiders and drones 😐😁).
At least there's one plus in the mission. Since all enemies are in standby mode the ranger squad will recover if you kill all near enemies, so they can die in all skirmishes, there's no problem as they'll reappear,
Now that all frogs are dead, next problem. Transports. There's 3 that need to go first. Yep, the 2 silvers and the purple ones. These are on right but to the back. You can't make any of these the 4th to be destroyed as bees will come immediately once you down the 4th transport.
So you have to go right a lot to avoid the first normal spiders transport and wait for NPCs. Then proceed to the purples one in a path that is far from the transports to each side. Remember you'll have to babysit the NPCs so they don't make a mess...
To deal with each transport do this:
- approach the transport in a way that enables you to shoot the opening but not alerting the enemies below it
- install ZERAs
- just after the transport opens, aim and shoot spritefall to the opening center. This will help to hit the center of the drop area and hopefully more bugs.
- activate ZERA, enter Nix, shoot cannister shots from both sides to transport opening, it probably won't come down before closing
- deal with enemies if necessary (only in the silvers will probably be really necessary)
- when it opens again finish the job
- rebuild ZERAs if there's no aggroed enemies
Spritefall step won't be necessary for transports with normal spiders, the ZERA is enough to kill them.
Rinse and repeat for the first silvers transport. Silvers take some time to die with ZERAs, with Nix's revolver and flamer. Use cannisters wisely you need them for the transports.
You'll probably have a few Nixs near start perhaps you'll have to make a big boring trip back to get another and return.
The second silvers will be the more troublesome as it's at a very low height, but can still be done. Abuse the revolver and flamer.
Now that the 3 bad ones are gone, return to start position. Take down right transport with spiders. Bees will come and settle in areas where the silver spiders transports where located.
The bees will be separated in 2 groups, but near each other.
Next goal is kill bees. Install ZERAs in road with some distance between them, doesn't need to be big. Next check the more isolated group of bees (probably the left one), and use the Spritefall in a bee towards its end horizontally, but if possible in the middle back to front. This will kill a few bees, while minimizing chances of pissing too many enemies at once. Activate ZERAs, enter Nix and walk backwards using revolver to kill bees.
Rinse and repeat until there's just a few bees (less than 5). If you need point for anything (nix, Spritefall) kill spiders from left transport as many times as necessary until you have what you need.
At this point all that should remain is 3 transports with spiders, 1 with red ants, some drones (or none) and a few bees (or none). Just handle each transport as before, skipping the Spritefall step as it's no longer necessary.
Phew, this really was long.😂
This mission is troublesome to do with low weapons. It takes time, cool head and patience. With high end weapons it will be a lot easier but I don't think it can be done in full frontal assault mode. Too few NPCs, too many spiders.
EDIT
With Heavy Bomber Phobos Z Plan 4, Nix Red Guard, ZEXR-GUN and Guard Assist Gun G this mission is a lot easier, but still not possible to do full assault. Phobos is really good here since most transports are high from the ground, it's effective against colonists and bees will be on the ground after they show up.

Mission 35 - Berth

This mission is long. An Outpost will show up once you've downed 3 of the 7 transports on the map. It will stay for more than 10 minutes on the map...

The best weapons are the ZERA-GUN and a gunship attack like the level 50 105mm Consecutive Destruction Rapid-fire Cannon or the level 43 105mm Rapid-fire Cannon D. Complement with Guard Post M3, which will be better than the Gun one and since most enemies are in standby you've got plenty of time to install them on the exoskeleton. For vehicles use the Powered Exoskeleton Nix C3, which although slow as molasses will have the benefit of being the Nix ZC little brother, so plenty of options to deal with everything. I tried to be a smart ass and use the level 45 Nix Red Shadow but was creamed twice. This is if you want to respect weapon limits for the mission (level 68).
If not bring ZEXR, an even better gunship attack, and either the Nix ZC or the Red Guard and it will be a lot easier.

At start pick both ranger squads and farm the ants from the first transport until you have a nix. You'll get rid of most of the drones too in the bargain. When you have the nix follow the river, pass by the bridge, and pick the fencer squad from ahead.
Now you should kill all 8 colonists walking around. A good place to snipe some is a small hill just to the right after the bridge in the road going to the beach. Some ants will probably come along with the colonists. Two are patrolling near the beach, you'll have to climb a hill, just opposite the one I mentioned across the road. These 2 will walk around the red and gold ants, it's better to wait for them to exit the beach to the road above it before pissing them.
When you finish the colonists, you should decide which of the 3 transports to take down. I would advise making it the third one the black ants one near the bridge, just up the hill to the left. This will enable you to quickly go back beyond the bridge by the road to the back of the map so that you're away from the outpost hits and in peace to handle the incoming drones and 5 colonists. BTW the 5 colonists will always come in a compact group (that's why the Red Shadow which is clearly a hard-level weapon was creamed...😂).

If you're respecting weapon limits it's probably wise to get rid of the 2 worst transports, the gold ant's ones. To get the one on the other side of the map you have to go almost near the waterfall, then follow the road to the beach. The WD squad will show up, but it's not easy to save them, as you'll need to concentrate on the golds and not the reds. You should always send the turrets before advancing (install Guard Post...) and you can throw them nearer the beach so that they kill the reds once the golds are dead, but it's not easy. I managed to still have 2 alive after I downed the gold ant's transport, but when the WDs arrived most golds traveled to the reds transport and I used the Nix revolver to shoot most while I was crawling towards the gold's transport which was closed by now. Remember the idea is not to down the reds transport... Of course, this will be a gazillion easier with the ZEXR as these will cream the golds, the reds, and everything else that will come.

Return to the bridge and go down the road for the next gold's transport. This one is easier, but be careful descending to the beach. I put the ZEXRs on top of the cliff instead of the beach, so when I started to go down the golds creamed my Nix C3. I could return to the bridge where I could get another spare Nix but decided to summon another. Stayed slightly out of the transport and when the golds dropped, shot the gunship attack to the first, it will kill almost all, and NPCs dealt with the rest (install Guard Post...) as long as you don't stay quiet which is the worse for some enemies. Just my luck the Nix got stuck on the top of the transport. The only resort was to wait for the NPCs to bring down the transport. They did at the 5th or 6th gold ants drop. This long chat just to show that with some creativity and thought you can solve some thorny issues successfully.
Golds gone, return to the bridge, go up the hill, down blacks transport.
Go immediately back the road before the bridge rebuild turrets and wait for the onslaught of drones. C3 revolver and burner will help too (another problem for the flimsy Red Shadow, not much luck with drones). When the 5 colonists arrive, kill one with a gunship attack then use Nix to cream the other 4.
Bring down the last 4 transports when the outpost is gone. Finito.

Mission 34 - Cave Invasion Final Stage

This mission is interesting, except that the map is a mess, and difficult to figure where to go.
There are 5 queen ants, one of them gold. And unlike hard and below, two waves of termites (wasn't expecting these).
Being the Limpet hater I did use them since I made a mess in my first run when the second termite's wave come and wanted to see if it also worked.
Bring ZEXR, FZ-GUN MX, Depth Crawler IV Custom, and either ZEX Launcher or Limpet Splendor ZD.
The idea is to bottleneck enemies at the entrance to the cave where you started and further back, so always fall back to this place when necessary. At the start throw ZEXRs to kill frogs and ants that will come, use FZ-GUN too. You won't get a DC for now.
Proceed in the large cave. There will be a big pillar in the center, with a shallow water area behind it. There are 2 queen ants there, along with some smaller stuff. They're usually separated by the large pillar, so you should go to the left and drop one or 2 ZEX Launchers, then retreat and go right and drop all other ones, but these are more difficult to place as there's a lot of smaller pillars in this area. Once you get a look at the queen ant moving it's good.
The other 3 are further away behind the right queen. The limpet will reach them if you shoot some pellets to the right place, which is not easy. DON'T ACTIVATE anything for now. Retreat to start cave, activate either limpet or ZEX Launcher and they will come. What they mean depends on what you get, but at least 2 queens should come. Queens do enter your start cave so fall back to the tunnel. Drop ZEXRs first and FZ-GUNs further near the tunnel. You'll have the DC but be careful, some gold ants can still manage to go near you.
When everything that was coming is dead return to the water shallow area, by the left side. No enemies should be here, if there are then repeat the last steps. Go slowly to allow rangers to keep up with you. When you're reaching the end of the shallow area wave of termites will spawn in your back. Use ZEXRs, stay inside DC. If you left the rangers behind they will be crushed and it will be harder for you.
What will remain is the eggs area, hopefully without the 3 queens. If they're still there, repeat the process you did before, falling back to the start cave until all queens are dead. Don't advance too much near the eggs to avoid triggering the last termite's wave.
Proceed to the eggs by the left side (it's easier), always wait for the rangers. When you're reaching them, the second termite's wave will spawn. Repeat, use ZEXRs when they're arriving, stay in DC.
Dealing with the eggs is a joke compared to the rest of the mission.
Another mission I just finish and forget, if it wasn't the dreadful maze would be better but I guess that was the difficulty Sandlot wanted to add.

Mission 33 - Cave Invasion Stage 2

Oh crap. A scripted mission in a giant cave 😑. If you want to follow the script this is hard as during the 2 last waves you'll be in the open cave or almost.
Hating this mission I cheated, and used the ZE Blaster, as I was losing my patience with the ZEX Launcher issues. I still used it thought.
There's 2 groups of NPCs, the sarge group is the scripted one. They will recover if they die. But stupidly, if the sarge dies but other soldiers are alive, you must return and kill them or the mission won't progress, as only when the leader is present they will proceed...
Bring ZEXR, ZEX Launcher, ZE Blaster and Depth Crawler IV Custom. Drop ZEXRs and activate near first group of ants. Drop below to cave bottom ZEX Launcher, activate, this is to kill spiders wandering below.
You'll get the DC probably before second group. Repeat, hopefully ZEXRs will rebuild before that.
Next is a tunnel with a smaller cave holding spiders, one of them silver. Use ZEXRs, some installed on DC top if you want.
From now on there will be 3 waves that are traps and need some attention, especially the last 2. As you're exiting the cave where the spiders were, drop ZEX Launcher turrets along the tunnel before reaching its end. When the wave spawns activate ZEX Launcher, they will be dead in a snap. Rebuild them ASAP.
You'll cross an arch, enter a tunnel, go into a cave, then another small tunnel going down where you'll reach a ledge that will be larger to the right. Here 2 large waves will spawn in the wall opposite the ledges, with black and gold ants. As they spread all over the place this is hard, so try to install ZEX Launcher on the wall where they spawn, and ZEXR and ZE Blaster on the ledge.
Once finished, the script will proceed to the last wave, which will be near the bottom maze. Throw ZEX Launcher below, ZEXRs too, and use ZE Blaster near you on the edge of the path. These 3 will not probably be enough to kill all silvers but will almost do it, making it easy to finish the mission.
It's unreliable. You can try to use FZ-GUN instead of ZEX Launcher or ZE Blaster and always try to fall back to a tunnel where you can bottleneck enemies, the only problem is that ants can easily come from your back too.
This is one of those missions I just finish and forget.
Update: This mission is HELL to do with weapon limits, you'll be limited to weapons level 66-67 and the AR has mostly crap or toys for inferno. Well, I did it after all, but yes it's hell. The strategy is significantly different from the better weapons version. If it's already dangerous to follow the sarge to the 2nd trap, to the third it's suicide. A goldie can wipe your ass any sec thought.

Mission 32 - Cave Invasion Stage 1

This mission isn't awful because you're able to bottleneck enemies on small tunnels when there's a ton of them. ZEXR and FZ-GUN will be your friends, the third is largely irrelevant probably a Guard gun/post and install it on the Depth Crawler. You can also try the robot toys, but they behave very badly in caves. In the last cave all enemies are on standby, enter it drop ZEXRs then retreat and block the tunnel with FZ-GUNs, just be careful because there's an upper tunnel before reaching the large cave, so further back in the corner is the ideal position since you will avoid shots from enemies and it will be easier to keep yourself and NPCs healthy. Use DC to help as the number of enemies can be overwhelming and some can pass the flames (it's a large number of golds and purples, along with spiders).

EDF 5 - Ranger DLC weapons analysis

The Ranger is with the Fencer the class that has been blessed by exceptional DLC weapons. Almost all are awesome and highly useable.

Air Raider - Inferno rages on - Guide to Super Challenge DLC2

If DLC1 missions are already peachy, DLC2 ones are a lot more. Many of the DLC2 levels are simply dreadfully hard. Even so, some of them can be done with some ease or cheesed, and some are good weapon farming levels.

Twin stick shooters opinions

Since the listing page was already long the opinions are better in a new one.

Exceptional games

Geometry Wars - This is one of the best shooters of all time, and all its iterations have been awesome. The one I enjoy most is Geometry Wars: Galaxies (Wii) and I have them all except the ones inside Project Gotham Racing games (2 and 4). Even if it's not my favorite, Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions is still an awesome game. The most striking feature of the game is its simplicity, it's just a no-frills shooter but an exceptional one. There are several original modes in this version, and the hardest and that I really don't like, but have to admit it's clever, it's Pacifism. The Pacifism levels are by far the most troublesome ones to master and to get the 3 stars. Still, it's an absolutely essential title to any person who likes shooters. It's digital-only, available on the PS4, PS3 and Vita and has completely separate but similar trophy lists for the 3 games. The Vita version is a particularly extraordinary feat as it feels almost like the PS3 and PS4 versions, and it's not screen clipped due to the lower resolution. It's not a perfect game. Do expect spawns over your ship, and sometimes the collision detection is not stellar. Totally unmissable.

Assault Android Cactus - An exceptionally fun shooter with a charming plot, characters and enemies and is so eminently playable. Good sound and music, good graphics, fluid controls, simplicity, everything you could want in a shooter. It borrows the keep the chain mechanic from Ikaruga. The game is extremely hard due to this and lots of RNG in the waves spawn points and movements, as finishing the levels isn't hard, but maintaining the chain to the end is. It was supposed to have a Vita version, but I doubt it could have been a decent game. Should not be missed either.

Dead Nation - This is the best Housemarque game by far (unfortunately, I'll get back to this). A good and well-thought campaign with no RNG so you can master all its aspects. Fluid gameplay and good progression. Nice and varied weapons, and you can upgrade the ones you want and not the crap that RNG will provide. Good enemies, are introduced along the way and along your character progression. Good atmosphere. And then a stupid and pointless DLC, Road of Devastation, which has some good ideas but it's so plagued by RNG that it's a mess. Probably created for the complainers that the main game is always the same. Still, the game itself is exceptional, particularly in morbid difficulty. Undead is not much worse than morbid, you'll only probably get out of ammo quicker. It's digital-only, available on the PS4, PS3 and Vita and has completely separate but similar trophy lists for the 3 games. The Vita version is awesome, although it has a few drawbacks but not in gameplay. Another sure one to have.

Good games

Alienation - I don't really know if this one should be here or in the regular ones. It's a absolute heartbreaking disappointment. Here is the most exceptional shooter in terms of gameplay, graphics and sound only to be smashed to pieces by RNG. There are some amazing enemies. The graphics are awesome, from the alien artifacts to the clever ice and light effects (check the light once you get out of the barracks near the house with the huge cannon). Music and sound effects are top-notch.  But this game is a plain RNG bore, totally the opposite of Dead Nation. The maps are always the same, but enemy groups and particularly bosses appearance and placement are random, so you can have at any difficulty runs that are a walk in the park or a nightmare. As an example while I was trying one of the characters in World 1, in the first mission I had 6 bosses in my path to finish it and I could only avoid one. If I was a new player I would probably never touch the game again. This is why RNG (or the pointless "procedural" glorified RNG) is a dumb option. To make it even worse you can get the best weapons for killing a meaningless member of a mob, and absolute junk ones after a huge battle with a boss, so there is almost surely no reward for doing the most difficult jobs in the highest difficulties, another baffling decision. There's no sense of progress, receiving as level end prize in legend 6 weapons all uncommon and common ones it's bloody stupid. And in the end the game is too easy, even in Legend difficulty, although granted the game is much better and interesting on master and legend. If there wasn't a bloody mess of RNG and design decisions, Alienation would be by far the BEST available shooter. And then Housemarque boss complains that arcade is dead. Of course it is, and they did their share to bury it. I'll come back to this... What an absolute waste.

PixelJunk Shooter 1 / 2 / Ultimate - This is an interesting game, but not really a true shooter. More an exploration, puzzle and shooter mix. The cartoonish pastel graphics are interesting, and the fluids and lights pseudo physics are nicely done and convincing. The bosses are interesting. Interesting homage to Dig Dug (doesn't work very well...) and Galaga in one of the stages. The ultimate version is an update for the PS4 and Vita containing the original 1 and 2 games from the PS3. The Vita version does suffer a lot from the reduced screen area but can be done, although it's harder than the PS4 version (except on the final bonus mission where it's easier on the Vita). It's a good introduction to shooters as it's less difficult than most other ones. Cross-buy, cross-save and cross-play.

Neon Chrome - This game has a difficult and obtrusive start. I did struggle to really figure out how the hell to play it. Once you get over that it's a good shooter and one of the only games where RNG levels (okay, not RNG, procedural...😂) do work and don't make a mess. There are some interesting weapons, some nice perks (and you can buy some at the level start to reduce RNG), the smart use of color helps the game a lot, the sound and music are good and gameplay is fluid. The only downside is crappy RNG to get some bonus levels, but 10Tons are the kings of RNG. Still, it's a quite good shooter overall. Don't miss doing the boss levels with the crossbow. It's also good for starters as you can farm power to make it easier if you need it.

Jydge - The best 10Tons shooter overall. Interesting missions, with some puzzles thrown at the mix, which makes it reasonably original. Very similar to Neon Chrome in many things, but maps are not RNG generated. Good cyberpunk atmosphere and music. Satisfying gameplay and not terribly hard. Recommended.

Prismatic Solid - I'm always fond of one-man shows, so I give these some greater respect. This game is the child of a solo Japanese programmer, who clearly is very good at 3D work. Although the game is mostly a 2D shooter, the enemies and environments are 3D objects generated in real-time. So it's particularly unique (Geometry Wars has sprites...). It has a lot of interesting ideas, good gameplay and good music. Being so different from everything else it's quite recommended.

Regular games

Nex Machina - Oh boy... This game has some exceptional roots. Robotron is one of the best shooters of all time, again for keeping a sound idea simple. There are no frills in it, but the game simply works and it's mighty fun to play. Nex Machina being its spiritual successor made the fatal mistake of precisely killing that: the simplicity. The graphics are exceptional, the effects too, sound and music are top notch. But then begin the issues. Hum, it's a Housemarque game, let me take a few wild guesses. It has a dash ability? Check. It has a secondary weapon? Check. It has a power-up? Check (well Dead Nation doesn't 😋). The main problem with Housemarque is that fundamentally all their games had the same core mechanics, and the only one where it really works is Dead Nation, and the other that could have is Alienation if they did not make a mess. There was little variation or innovation in their games, which sometimes it's not necessary anyway as long as the final product is good. Nex Machina is too complex and sacrifices Robotron's simplicity to gain... nothing. It's difficult to say what kind of shooter even is, as it ranges from bullet hell to quests to puzzles to whatever is next but ultimately the plain good shooting experience seems to be there but it's not. Unfortunately disappointing, it's fun but nothing stellar.

Ruiner - I was really anticipating something extraordinary by reading the reviews and comments on this game. Surely come out disappointed. For starters what really is cyberpunk design has some latitude. But Ruiner developers used that to just make things dark and hide them which isn't helpful or even practical in this case. The game has a ton of pointless stuff, like the main hub (finding cats?!?!?) and the light speed bike. Smartly the game uses all buttons on the controller, and quite a few for more than 1 function, which is a mess in a shooter (all really good shooters just happen to be awesome with 1 or 2 buttons besides directional controls...) and probably they were pissed the controller didn't have a few more to use. Then there's the combat which is the biggest mess. Enemies have no patterns or anything discernible they just spawn and attack. Bosses are just worse versions of this with one that just randomly teleports around randomly. I can't even understand if they wanted to give a Dark Souls combat feel or anything else. Bosses are also bullet sponges (and supposedly they're better after patches), but in the end before these patches you could also cheese all bosses by using some abilities, which was bloody stupid. They tried to apply every single idea they probably had or seen in every game they played and the result is a bloody mess, as there's really nothing that is stellar in the whole game. It's playable, but what a fraud.

Super Stardust Delta - This Asteroids evolution on a 3D planet is an interesting shooter. There are 3 main weapons, that work in original ways. The graphics and sound are good, and it's enjoyable to play. However, there's a lot of RNG in a few things you'll want and it becomes annoying: the shields are RNG, the weapon upgrades are RNG. Collision detection is already a thorny science in 2D, in 3D is a lot worse and it will show, both for your benefit and prejudice. However, the biggest issue was that they decided on the Vita version to have minigames with touch and even worse motion controls. And trophies on those games. Either because Sony decided to cut costs and chose cheap and crappy touch and motion chips and sensors, or they were uncharted territory at Vita creation time, the simple fact is that these things don't work properly in the Vita. So anything related should be in the try for fun department and not on the you'll likely have to do it one. Because at that moment the game sucks badly, it's imprecise and annoying. And then the fun is gone.

Weak games

Tesla vs Lovecraft - This game starts so well. An interesting shooter, with some good mechanics, use of color, fluid gameplay, good sound and music. Progress is good until you get to Eldritch difficulty, the highest one. Then the game becomes a boredom fest of stupid RNG as around 25% of the missions are simply impossible unless you get the right perks. Which are random... There's no true skill involved, you simply can't do the missions without upgrades that will help, so it's playing until RNGesus will provide a decent combination that can make the levels playable. A bloody stupid decision that ruined an otherwise good game. Let's face it RNG does simplify a lot of things in development, and 10Tons does abuse that with the expected results. Avoid.

Wanted Corp. - For starters, I must say I only finished the Vita version. The game isn't dreadful, but it's quite dumb. You play with an AI partner that is totally dumb. The color scheme used doesn't work, as it's a sort of Dead Nation one tone maps, but it's mostly confusing and you can't see anything decently. In the Vita version, you're hit by enemies outside the screen, which are probably remains from the PS3 version which likely has twice the screen size. Bosses are a joke to deal with. The story is as dumb as possible, and the dialogs are laughable. The best thing overall is an AI partner that says that you have to be careful with mines and throws itself to them one or 2 secs later...

Tachyon Project - A interesting Geometry Wars clone with a few good ideas, but too many bugs and issues. Also too easy. Seems to be a rushed or unfinished project. A pity, had potential.

Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate 100% tips

The game is cross-buy for the Vita and PS4. The Vita version is a lot harder to play and finish 100%. The screen is half the size so you can't plan things in advance as simply they're not visible, so on many levels, you must memorize where the enemies are to solve them. I died a ton of times by small invisible droplets of lava (or water if I was using the lave suit) that are in the walls. Reaction to controls is good but not stellar. Dealing with the bosses is a lot worse, especially from the 3rd one onwards as you can't see all the of the boss, the smaller enemies or their shots, so if you can play it on the PS4. It's still viable and I did it because I'm stubborn, but frankly, your life will be a lot easier if you play it on the PS4. It's still one of the best Vita shooters, just has to deal with the Vita limitations.

Also on the Vita version if the enemy to which you just shot goes outside the screen area by yours or his movement while the bullets or missiles are traveling towards him, do realize it's almost certain they will all hit the target but do no damage...

While you have the shield, you won't overheat by shooting missiles...

Let me stress the HUGE importance of getting all the 7 scientists plus the optional special green scientist with the flag, all the required diamonds, and all the secret areas for each of the 5 levels in each stage in one go. If you, don't you have to replay ALL the stages you did not achieve that and again from beginning to end while fulfilling these requirements, with the diamonds the only one that is cumulative in all runs. If it's the last stage of each area, yes you have to do the boss fight successfully another time.

So before exiting each level pause the game and verify that you have all diamonds picked and no dead scientists. Scientists are added at each level, so it's 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 at the final, the green scientist is not added to this count and there's no place to know if you picked it except when in the main map. If you die in a level and have to repeat it you have to visit AGAIN the secret areas.

Do realize that there's only one green scientist per stage and that most boss areas have diamonds in the area leading up to the boss, and some even have the stage green scientist too.

In the 6th and last area, Stage Carry the Torch, on the third level (when you should have 21 scientists rescued) DON'T exit the level before killing the lava spitter near the exit. After you do that there should be a new secret area with water just below where you pulled the door to open it. If it's not there, be sure to shoot every bit of wall that was possible in the part where you started the level, just below where the lava enemy was, as a dim area to the left will appear causing the other one to open.

The 4 secret areas in this stage are one on each of the 4 last levels. On the 2nd level (from start) the area is to the right where you need to climb the lava tunnel to pick the diamond, so do that again up to the diamond area to be sure it counts (I had to repeat this stage 4 times... 😐😑)

You'll almost certainly die with even small collisions with enemies, whether they're shooting or not, which is especially problematic in the 6th area in the dark areas.

In the penultimate stage of the last area, Reactive Relics of Lights Out, there's a path going up and right just before the exit to the last level, it has no survivors or diamonds but will make you miss the completion of the secret areas.

The secret area is much easier in the Vita than on the PS4 thought...

Complete list of Vita, PS4 and PS3 cross-buy games with multiple trophy lists

This is likely a complete list of games that through cross-buy provide multiple trophy lists. Yes, the only games missing are trash trophy games, but those only interest some people, and probably they're not interested in any of these.

Some games only fulfill the requirements on a specific region, it's mentioned if it's the case. If the game only provides a 100% trophy list it's not mentioned, the ones that provide platinums for each stack of the game are mentioned. I did not consider multi-region stacks, and information is mostly for US and Europe stores.

Complete list of twin stick shooters games for PS5, PS4, PS3 and PS Vita

Last update - Jan 2024

I'm updating this list which is frankly a huge PITA as in the last 2 years more than 80% of shooters that have been published on PSN is just terrible trophy hunters trash! Such is the sad state of game publishing on PlayStation platforms, something that sadly was predictable. Even more sadly, it will only get worse.

Being a fan of twin-stick, top-down and scrolling shooters, which is a niche, I found it awfully difficult to find information on what's really available for the PS4, Vita, and PS3 (and now PS5). In my quest, I even found quite a few I didn't even knew existed, and that the PS4 has quite a reasonable list. Probably not many fans of the genre, but considering how much time I spent digging this perhaps it's useful for other people.

Complete list of puzzle games for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita

I do enjoy puzzle games a lot so I've been compiling for years this list. It will probably never be really complete but it's quite thorough. Still, a work in progress of developer, publisher, year released, cross-buy information, etc.

Classification into groups isn't easy either, hope I've done a decent job.

Since I don't condone trash games for trophy junkies, there's none or almost on the list.

Some of the games on this list will be stellar, some will be crap. Consider that before buying. I have opinions on the games I can give one at the end of the list.

If you have any additions of games I've missed drop me a note.

Opinions:

Stellar and shouldn't be missed

Journey, Flower and Hohokum, for how unique and original they're. AER: Memories of Old, clearly a labor of love, which has absolutely stellar flying controls and 3 beautifully designed and well thought main areas of puzzles which can all be easily solved with some brains. Chariot, hard as nails but so, so original and has fantastic gameplay, especially in coop. Lara Croft Go and Hitman Go, really polished and clever products, although the isometric movement of Lara sometimes doesn't work and it needed another approach. Degrees of Separation, another really clever and original labor of love, with the crappy and pointless map the only downside. Fez, an incredible achievement in game design, music and programming (awesome game engine created just for the title).

Good

PAIN for the whacko theme and gameplay, it's hard as nails but so much fun and original. Glass Masquerade and Glass Masquerade 2: Illusions, are really well done. although the music is insanely repetitive (can't even figure out how people claim these need guides to solve...). Metrico+, a really clever game, but probably too weird for most people which never created or used infographics. The Spectrum Retreat, is really clever and well crafted, but very difficult towards the end. Donut County, original and fun, but too short and easy. Anarcute, the more action puzzles I play, the more I think this game is very good and original even if it's not devoid of issues. The Last Guy, not totally a puzzle game, but very original and fun to play, but very hard. The Unfinished Swan is quite original too, with a predominantly black and white theme. Waking Violet a nice puzle game with some clever ideas and mechanics, plays really well on the Vita (and it's cross-buy). The Bridge, another really clever and original puzzle game, it does get nasty hard even before halfway, but at least has a very useful undo to help.

Regular

Hue, an interesting game and puzzles, but the color switching controls are badly thought and executed on the controller. One Upon Light is interesting but has a few issues, also there are 2 levels that require a lot of dexterity and some luck (hint: on the last level don't even try to figure or understand, just rush your way through the lamp shadows as you have a timed gate). Back To Bed, The Turing Test, Furmins, MouseCraft, Slayaway Camp: Butcher's Cut, Unmechanical: Extended, Machinarium, Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, Thomas Was Alone, Minesweeper Genius.

Weak

Observation, some clever ideas, and execution but too boring and repetitive, and the story is too much a pseudo horror 2001. Mugsters, a one-man job, but unfortunately too amateurish. Neonwall, certainly better with VR but the controls without VR were not really thought in the best way, a pity. Nihilumbra, starts good, but the void mode is mostly cheap stupid puzzles with unresponsive controls, and the PS4 version is a nightmare of dreadfulness due to how the painting controls work (the probable reason it's only for sale in Asia), it was clearly thought as phone game but still feels cheap. King Oddball, has more luck and RNG than "physics" (but it's a 10tons game, so that was expected).

Dreadful

Felix the Reaper, not discussing graphics and music which will be a personal taste, the game was clearly developed to be played with a mouse with a direct translation for a controller; the only "slight" issue is that the game has timed puzzles, with absolutely dreadful controls... Kill the Bad Guy, unbelievably is even worse, it mimics mouse controls on buttons in such a stupid way that it has to be played to be believed someone would even create such a thing, and even worse has missions that are only possible once in a while when RNG allows... Chess Knights: Viking Lands, isn't a bad puzzle game, but so amateurishly done that it should not be sold, as the game will start confusing which levels are which if you don't play it straight from beginning to end.

EDF 5 - Mission 86 - Secret in the Dark

This is THE one. The hardest mission for the AR n the whole main campaign by far. This mission is hell.

I don't think it makes much difference using limpets or not. There are so many things that can go wrong that this is a giant PITA to do.

Details:

The mission is divided into 2 parts.

It starts with 4 tunnel exits spitting ants (between 8 and 12) and 1 spitting bees (12). Near the start position, you can destroy one of the ant's tunnels by dropping down to the right and using a limpet (which will enable you to summon a Depth Crawler). A Ranger (Grant MTX) or a WD (Plasma Great Canon) will be able to destroy the top bees tunnel by hitting the main pillar near it.

Once all 5 tunnels are destroyed the 2nd part starts. The biggest issue is the first part anyway, which is way worse than the 2nd.

You have 2 NPC groups of rangers that are not controllable and are scripted to go up to the bees tunnel (doesn't matter if it was destroyed or not by the time they reach it). There are 2 main dreadful spots: once you reach the arch that you can see in front of you when you start, and when the NPCs (and probably you) reach the place where the first ant's tunnel is in your path as they seem to stop there for a few secs and it can be a massacre.

To me, the ants are even worse than the bees. They're more difficult to hit and come in groups. Also, they will spit acid from far or just show up from under you and kill you or the NPCs in a snap. You'll see that easily when you pass under the arch.

What makes matters worse is that the only viable turrets if not using DLC ones are the ZEXR and the ZEX Launcher. I managed to do it once with tremendous luck with the ZEX Launcher... in around 200 or 300 tries. Granted when I died it was 99% of the time in the first minute or so. The biggest issue with the ZEX Launcher is how easy it is to wipe you and/or the NPCs, so you don't even need the enemies 😂 (really crying would be more correct). The second biggest issue is that the turrets and even the NPCs are very inefficient here. You just need an ant walking below you or the turrets and they will try to kill it which is impossible, while you and the NPCs are massacred by the other enemies. The ant will probably stop and try to kill the NPCs or you too, but can't either as she's under the ledge, but it's a deadlock, while it's a free-range for the other enemies. The hardest thing is surviving until the 4 ant tunnels are destroyed.

You can also be wiped out just by exiting the Depth Crawler to install a turret or a support turret. Also trying to climb the DC to install a turret is most of the time a nightmare due to the steep slant of the ledges as it doesn't work.

I eventually quit and switched the ZEX Launcher for the ZE Blaster, at least that one is feasible.

The Ranger has a much easier life here, as the Reverse Shooter fits like a glove in this mission. Even there the AR is at disadvantage, using the Life Vendor is very troublesome in this mission. I do recommend you just do this mission with him, and split-screen the other classes with the Ranger.

EDF 4.1 M87 Massive Mobilization Inferno

This is the hardest mission in EDF 4.1 for all classes. There's no way to cheese it or solve it with relative ease like Monster Party or Mountain Liberation which arguably are worse, but the AR can do both with specific load-outs. This mission is long, very long. You must deal with enemies in sections because if you piss a few parts of the map at once, you're likely dead.

The mission has 5 transports. The one on the right spawns purple ants, the one in the middle spiders, the one to the left that will be moving gold ants, the one in the back right gold ants, and the last in the far back left silver spiders.

The mission has a giant Quadruped Fortress which you really don't want to piss at the start (although I've seen an interesting strategy in multiplayer in which they started by doing that after wiping out the FVs and using it as a shield, as the mech body will not disappear). There are also 3 deroys, one of which is too much near to the mech to be possible to handle without waking it up. Four hectors are around, 3 of them shielded ones, the most troublesome ones are the Particle Stream Gun ones that will shoot the very fast and powerful projectiles that can wipe you in a single shot (at least with low armor).

And the icing on the cake, a bazillion flying vehicles...

The class that can handle this solo with fewer troubles is by far the AR (who else, if it's a messy mission he'll be there to solve it).

Weapons:
Dual ZEXR-GUN
Epsilon Armored Blast Railgun E
Armor: 1000

This can also be done with the ZEXR-GUN and Life Vendor ZD, but it's harder.

First the things you must take care of:

- the epsilon shots are piercing, so be REALLY careful what you shoot and what can be in the back as you can ruin the run with a simple mistake

- the worst enemies are flying vehicles, followed by the gold ants

- you should always try to use one set of ZEXRs at a time, saving the next one to when the first ends, especially if there's FVs around, and it's good practice to put the first set in the forward positions so that you know which one is each when you need to start them. The timing for rebuilding a set of ZEXRs is just slightly less than the time they last shooting. You can't be in the tank too much time, they don't rebuild while you're there.

- always keep moving with FVs around, this lessens the chances of them hitting you and the NPCs (same with Deroy and hector shots anyway)

- FVs have wildly varied flying paths most will go by you sometime even if they're not aggroed

- any enemies that are relatively close to any FV you hit will be aggroed too

- the mech can follow different paths, although usually it will go near your start position, and then near your current position

- the most likely way for you to die is by an FV homing on you, stunning you and zapping you to death

- NPCs can be easily wiped out by FVs, golds, and silvers.

The first thing you should do is get rid of as many flying vehicles as possible. They're the worst enemies as if one focuses on you or any of the NPCs it can wipe you or them out or do considerable damage. Your loadout isn't good to handle them. So all you can do is for a while lay consecutive sets of turrets to try to diminish the number of FVs. This is crucial or the number of FVs that will come in the first transport you'll bring down is so overwhelming that either you or most of your NPCs will be wiped out. During this phase a few spiders or even less common a few purple ants can come, the ZEXRs will handle them. The rightmost deroy can also wake, there's no issue just be alert to that and wipe him out with the tank ASAP. Yes, this is boring but crucial believe me. Your goal is to get a third to half the FVs down.
This can be considerably easier if you're playing (even alone) split screen with another class. The ranger excels at sniping (Hercules rocks here), WD is sadly a boredom (Monster) and even Fencer (whatever you can use for sniping) will help a lot. Hide the AR or the other class in the tank while you're not using it. Be careful NOT to snipe any FVs near the mech. NO GUIDED WEAPONS, so no Emerald, Mirage, FGX High Altitude Impact Missiles, zilch!!!

After this rebuild both ZEXR sets. The first goal is to take down the purple's transport. From the start position put one set towards the right (two rolls between each is good spacing), then the next 3 around the tank area. Bring down transport when it starts to open. This is always important so that you can bring him down in one opening, or he'll probably drop more enemies next time it opens again. If the deroy is still there' he'll probably wake at the first epsilon shot, kill him, then return to transport and bring it down. Activate the first set of ZEXRs, saving the next one for now. Shoot purple ants sideways, NEVER towards the back.
Activate the next set of ZEXRs when the first is gone, rebuild and keep doing this until all ants and FVs are gone.

This first transport will liberate a crucial area. The second lot at the right of the map is flat for a few squares to the left. You'll handle most things in that area since this will make the ZEXRs a lot more efficient. In most areas of the map, the rubble will help the enemies and will make a lot of the ZEXRs ammo be wasted on rubble hits. By moving and camping in this open area you'll maximize ZEXRs efficiency and will be so much easier to handle golds and silvers.

The next transport is the spider's one. Although it should be handled from your new conquered position, when downing him you'll wake 2 hectors. So getting rid of one will help. Only the left one (the blue unshielded) can be hit with confidence without making a mess further back. Install ZEXRs in front of him, as the spiders and a few FVs will come, and wipe him out facing him frontally slightly to its right, he'll be gone in 2 shots.

Now go to the aforementioned place, the second block on the right of the map. Install the first batch of ZEXRs more towards the left, second near map edge where you'll stay with the tank. Two possibilities. You can try to hit at least once the shielded hector just below the transport (or twice) or down the transport first then deal with the hector. Exit tank and activate the first set of ZEXRs. If you did not destroy the hector be really careful where you hit him, chances are you'll have the mech, a deroy, and the silver spiders behind him. It's better to take a few hits from him, than risk a mess. As long as you're moving even slowly the hector will miss most shots, if necessary move backward to the map end. Activate the second set of ZEXRs when needed. The number of FVs may be still daunting at this point.
When spiders transport, spiders, yellow shielded hector, and FVs are gone, rebuild ZEXRs and time for next transport.

The next one will be the gold ants one to your right. Install the first batch of ZEXRs in the open area but towards that transport. The second, further back near the end of the open area. Destroy gold ants transport and activate ZEXRs. In this case activate the second set of ZEXRs shortly after the first, gold ants are nasty you want to get rid of them even more than FVs. Shoot tank at yellow ants to help. The yellow shielded deroy coming is a machine gun one, you'll have plenty of time to deal with it before it's a threat. When this part has ended rebuild ZEXRs and proceed to last gold ants transport.

The last gold ants transport is the one moving to your left. You should wait for it to be on the way to way and more to the left, to avoid waking the big deroy near it or the mech. Install the 2 groups of ZEXRs in the open towards the transport, as usual, the first more near the transport, the second more near your position. Takedown the transport and the ZEXRs will likely handle all yellow ants. The number of FVs should be pretty low.

At this point or when you handle the biggest deroy a group of rangers, the Omega team will spawn near the back map border. Capture them ASAP, they'll be great to handle FVs and silver spiders at the end.

Now attack and destroy the furthest deroy, it's the only medium one (2 diamond spikes on each leg). You can try to farm it for weapon crates by destroying the 6 laser diamonds and the 3 spikes before killing it but it's risky.

All that remains is the silvers transport, the mech, and its nearby deroy, and a sole hector near the last transport. You have 2 options:

- destroy transport then deal with mech

- deal with mech, then destroy transport, optionally farming the silvers

If you want to destroy transport place the ZEXRs the same way you did for the first yellow ant's transport. Then move along the right map border (from start), shoot the transport down, and move back quickly to near ZEXRs, activating them. If everything goes fine ZEXRs and NPCs will kill silvers, help with the tank. If the hector comes, deal with it too, although it's unusual.

Dealing with the mech isn't troublesome but you need to be careful to avoid that the NPCs are wiped out. Shoot and destroy the deroy so that the mech starts. If the deroy moves and the mech doesn't start you should destroy the last transport before dealing with the mech, you'll have to shoot some FVs moving around it to make it move. Sometimes after the mech starts moving it will be attacked by gunships and will be severely damaged.
The mech has 6 dangerous weapons: a really nasty cannon inside it on the back of the opening and 5 lasers, two on each side of the head and one below centrally between its back legs. The first one to be active will be the cannon, but as long as you keep a long-distance it won't hit you or the NPCs. It's the easiest one to shoot down, you'll see an explosion animation when you do. The other 5 are more troublesome. The mech has shields that make it hard to hit the lasers. It's also problematic to hit the ones on each side of the head from the same position. Try to deal with the back one first, then the two near the front in the side you can, hopefully, they will be in the open and not behind the shields. When this has been done wait for the mech to move and have its other side towards you so you can destroy the last 2 lasers.
When this has been done, approach the mech and try to hit it inside when its doors are open and you can see the red inside. The angle to hit that with the tank isn't totally easy to get. You can try this while the mech still has lasers active, but you risk that the NPCs are wiped out, and they will come in handy.
The mech part is easier with a second class of course since sniping the mech weapons with the ranger or WD will be a lot easier than with the tank, as both their weapons have zoom.

When the mech is out, deal with the last transport if you didn't, then last hector, and finally the last few FVs. The last FVs can be a pain to kill, they're very high, and hitting them with the tank isn't easy. ZEXRs usually can't reach them either.

It's not totally easy but the best way I found. This is the hardest mission, after all, it wasn't ever going to be easy. You can do similar runs with the Ranger and WD solo, but it's a lot harder than with the AR (best weapons for Ranger will be Hercules + AF100 or Reverse Shooter X, and WD the Monster-S + Idunn-FF or Laser Lance Sigma).

EDF 5 - 60 Mountain Investigation Inferno AR, WD and Ranger

This is a scripted mission that apparently seems easy but it's very hard to accomplish. Without knowledge of what happens and thinking of a way to solve it, you'll never do it in Inferno.

There will be 3 NPC squads. A double one with rangers that will be near your start position, of which their captains (2) and only them are invincible until they can be joined after they reach the mountain top and the voice line "Attack the nest" is heard. One with WDs that will spawn later in the mountains off the map and so really hard to capture, roughly opposite the hive from your start position. And another with rangers that will spawn to the left of your start.

There will be a lot of bee waves, but your biggest concern will be the last 3, that will spawn from the nest, and the last also includes 3 queens. However, the game will end sometime during this last wave. Once your 3 squads are wiped out you're dead. The biggest issue is that the 3 squads will be in different positions which makes attacks on the bees during these waves difficult as they will be spread on 3 different areas and it's not possible to hit them all at the same time. Capturing any squads isn't easy. The simplest one to do that is the last rangers squad that will spawn towards the left of the hive. All of them will be wiped out in a snap if you don't kill the bees REALLY fast, as the dumb idiots stay in their position and that's the worse you can do with bees (well basically that's the worse you can do with most enemies).

The best strategy is simple and the same for all classes.

At first, go back so you can kill the nearest bees without them aggro them on you. Then proceed slowly as the first group of rangers advance. You do need to kill all possible bees, or you'll risk that only the 2 invincible captains reach the mountain top. So while staying back wipe out all bees on the ground and the small waves that arrive flying.

When the rangers start climbing the mountain towards the nest you should proceed fast to the left of the nest to capture the last ranger squad. You'll have to wipe more bees there too. Then climb the mountain towards the WD squad that you won't be able to capture, at least easily (can be done with a rocket by hitting the leader but it's hard and not necessary). Lastly staying in the back of the mountain wipe out the first 2 waves as fast as possible, as in this place it's seldom any bees will come up to bother. When the 3rd wave starts and the queens come, go away as the mission will end shortly and it's hard for any NPCs to be alive then. The ranger squad you captured will be useful as final bait.

Air Raider - The best vehicle is the Naegling. However, it's crap to drive it in EDF 5 in rough terrain as it can easily topple. Beware that most strafe attacks will be too low to hit bees. Also, they're not very wide so only a few bees are hit.

The KM6 attacks I used in the following video were the ones that worked better. Still, they're not perfect and you have to be careful when to use them, as you'll need credits to be able to use them again.

I did not go to the place I wanted (top of the mountain like with Ranger and WD videos) but amazingly, the game still awarded the mission complete, that's the reason I uploaded this run.

https://youtu.be/66wi2C7o3mo

Ranger - MEX5 Emerald and Reverse Shooter are the best options here. MEX5 Emerald needs to be fairly upgraded, especially in the number of ammo. Use wisely the reverse shooter between waves to freshen the NPC bait (see video). You need the Hybrid Protector E9 suit or it's a pain to get where you need on time, the travel distance is very long.

https://youtu.be/66wi2C7o3mo

Wing Diver - Gleipnir α and Mirage 15WR are the best options, but both need to be fairly upgraded to work. The best core is the VM Rush Core, however charging the Gleipnir and flying are not compatible, so you must save the Gleipnir for the best opportunities and not touch it while flying. Also, the Mirage isn't the best option for bees as they will aggro to you in circles and the hitbox of the mirage is small and focus only on the front (you can't track enemies around you like the Naegling and Emerald), this can cause serious problems.

You can try with the Big Bang core but it drives me insane dragging around, so I seldom use it, but the 200% weapons charge is amazing.

EDF 5 - 109 No.11 Inferno AR

This is going to be nirvana for the TL;DR people.😋😂 This mission is long as hell. There are a ton of things to describe.

The mission isn't terribly hard but I'm still not happy with any of the solutions I've found. The mission is overall easy, except for the third phase of the shield, the bullet hell phase.

Major hint

If you're struggling to do this mission with any class on solo use split screen and as a second class choose an AR with the best Barga you have, a guard post, and optionally the Electromagnetic Wall and Life Vendor (or ZEXRs). Capture all fast NPCs with main class (WDs, Grim Reapers, optionally Sarge squad), install shield around NPCs where they start with 2nd AR, kill frogs and cosmos, then go front left beyond spiders ship, bring it down, destroy main ship mega cannon, destroy pillbugs ship, return near AR which should have already been able to request a Barga. Install Barga ahead of tanks and players, protect them with shield, then bring down the ants ship. Most enemies will focus on the Barga, leaving you in peace, the NPCs will handle small fish. Before destroying the mothership shield for the next phase get a new Barga and put it forward more under the next barrier, rebuild shield and install around tanks, return AR to Barga, pick health crates for you and NPCs and just turkey shoot the mothership shield parts from near the tanks inside your shield. Rinse and repeat.

I've settled that the best way is with ZEXR, Bulge Laser Beam Mode Z, Life Vendor ZD and Nix ZC. Takes close to 1 hour to do this way, it's likely a lot easier with Limpet Sniper, Bargas or a heli, but since I'm allergic to all of them...

I don't know if I'll publish a video or not, it's very long and there's too much boring parts. A screen taken at the end:

I know this could be from any difficulty, but yes it's from inferno. Still had a few NPCs left on this run, mostly the WDs, one or Fencers and Rangers, and amazingly 2 of the slower fencers.

Essential weapons:

- Life Vendor ZD, I tried shields, Guard Posts, Zone Protectors, basically everything from support. Life Vendor works best because although you only have 5 they're really only necessary at the start of the 3 shield phases. Shields are blown in a snap in all shield start phases, so completely unuseful. Protection / guard is not enough during these parts, so the reason for the Life Vendor, and the same reason the Reverse Shooter X is almost essential for the Ranger too.

- ZEXR-GUN. What else would be awesome? Although your NPC soldiers and the3tankswill help a lot with the small stuff, the ZEXR makes this even more productive and more efficient. It also helps a gazillion since only enemies will wield ponts for the exoskeleton and you're going to need a lot of them.

- Bulge Laser Beam Mode Z. Not perfect but the best other weapon that works here. shields have wild trajectories and are very fast in phases 2 and 3, but they help. Also excellent to deal with cosmos and frogs when needed, along with the giant cannon. As they say in my country, constant water dropping wears away a stone, so keep using them they will help.

- Nix ZC. Only option for exoskeletons. Sturdy and plenty of options. And the best to destroy shield cannon and locks, and the mothership itself. And frogs and cosmos. And everything else for that matter. Yes, Nix ZC rocks.

Armor: 1000

You can be one shot with 1k armor, but it's not that common. As long as there's NPCs around you or closer to the worse things (cannon from shields, cosmos, frogs and blue tadpoles) it can be done.

EDF 5 - 108 Scorched Earth Inferno AR

Mission 108 does deserve a separate post. In the end, it's the best mission overall in the main game campaign and by a long distance. Like Scorching which was already the best mission overall in 4.1, they maintained the tradition with this evolution.

The mission is relatively quick to do with the AR and there's a variety of weapons that can be used to accomplish it successfully. It has a varied enemy roster that makes it pleasing to do, and the waves are different enough to keep the pressure and interest from start to end.

Although I can understand the difficulty and time it takes to create a mission like this it's a pity there's so little compared to it in the whole game. 110, 109 and 100 would be a lot more interesting with less RNG and extreme enemies that just make the missions more dependent on luck than strategy or skill, which makes them annoying and unpleasing to do again. 94, 98, 104, 105 and 107 are good, but even 94 falls short of the thrill that is 108.

Let's hope EDF 6 brings more of this kind of mission.

First strategy - Naegling and bomber attacks

Weapons:
Heavy Bomber Phobos Z Plan 4
Combat Bomber KM6 Plan Z4
Bulge Laser Beam Mode Z
Naegling Self-Propelled Missile Launcher XEM
Armor: 1000

The most exciting and interesting missions in the game. It's an improvement from Scorching in 4.1, with the worse benefit that there's no chance for a pause or relaxation between the 4 waves, it's a rarely ending onslaught of enemies.

I really wanted to solve this one in inferno as nicely as in hard but it's not possible. I don't know if Spritefall's are an option for Bulge. My 3 ones (Power Mode, Maximum and Destroy) are very basic and don't even handle a large anchor, so an oversized one would take forever, and even maxed out I don't think they will work. In practical terms, it takes the same time to use the bulge or Spritefall on an anchor, the bulge can require more work for the giant bee if she moves. UPDATE As I have 2 of the Spritefalls more upgraded, I don't think Spritefalls can be an option. You need 2 or 3 uses of one to takedown a large anchor, can't even dream to use it for the oversized one, there's no concentration of enemies where it would be useful too.

At start use immediately Phobos and KM6 incoming mob. While capturing all 6 NPC squads continue to use Phobos and KM6. If you're too successful it will be a pain as the next wave will spawn before you have the vehicle. When you can summon the vehicle as far back as possible. Always use Phobos and KM6 until all Deroys are gone, as unfortunately, it's difficult to kill their leg weapons in inferno, considering there's bigger fish to deal with, as they would be mostly harmless then. When in the vehicle drive in reverse to the left back corner of the map. Focus first on drones, then deroy legs if there's one alive, then ground stuff (spiders, cosmos). When you reach the map end continue until you have some buildings to your left, summon new naegling when you can.

Bees, pill bugs and the queen bee will come from the right considering start. Use Naegling extensively to eliminate remaining bombers, bees, pill bugs and everything else alive. When you see the queen bee in range kill her with the bulge, it works surprisingly well for that. When it arrives, enter it and proceed driving in reverse to the opposite right corner of the map, shooting sideways to kill tadpoles. Proceeding up by the left of the map is a bad idea, as you'll be very near the anchors when they drop. Before you reach the end exit and drop KM6 along the road, it will kill many tadpoles. When you reach the map end, go up, yes always driving in reverse. At this point the only NPCs alive should be the WDs and some fencers, the others should be dead or almost. Use KM6 again if possible or necessary

If you performed too well, you'll still be going in the back road when the pylons arrive or you should be driving up after reaching the map ends when the pylons drop, the larger one in the middle will be the last and it comes later than the 4 small ones. Use the bulge ASAP on that one.
Send Phobos to the mob coming from the pylons and KM6 too, or along the road if there are many enemies still coming along that way. Continue using Naegling when the attacks are coming and summon 2 more when possible. It's likely the queen ant spawned (king spider is spawned later), use KM6 or Phobos on her.
Use bulge on the 2 LEFT pylons. Massacre the coming small fish with Naegling, and when possible kill the nearest right pylon. Don't destroy the furthest one, it will "only" drop red and black ants. It's likely you'll only have 2 or 3 NPC WDs alive, perhaps 1 or 2 fencers too. Start picking crates, to heal NPCs (and you)and pick weapons. Use Naegling to kill spawning small fish, if you kill them all the laser ranger squad and GR fencers will spawn again, but with low health. Pick crates to heal them to full and then you can travel around picking what you want, the NPCs will kill the small fish. If you keep on using the Naegling against the small fish, the pylon will probably be destroyed too.

You can farm the pylon but it's not very interesting. Most crates will be to the right of the place you probably ended (up right corner from start) as it was the point where many enemies died with your initial attacks and around the start area and its back.
Some will be inside the pools area, these will be easier to pick on foot, which is safe once you have enough healthy NPCs alive again.
The Naegling is junk at 6600 armor, but the ability to kill small fish like bombers, bees and tadpoles that NPCs struggle to handle is a must.

This isn't easy. It's not possible to succeed always, there are too many waves and hard enemies in this mission. Important:

- try to get rid of the 3 deroys, they will fry your 2 NPC exoskeletons in a snap, if they last longer the mission will be easier.

- try to use the first Naegling as much as possible, as you'll use the 2nd a lot because there are 102 tadpoles in the third wave and it's the most difficult time to recall one

- the only likely survivors until almost the end of the mission from the first wave are the 2 heavy cosmonauts because if they don't get hit by Naegling missiles NPCs won't kill them as they're too spread and stuck with other issues

- the queen bee is important but not crucial to handle quickly, but the bulge works surprisingly well with her

- the 2 blue tadpoles from wave 3 are also thorny as you have no easy way to handle them, they will eventually die to Naegling missiles or KM6 but can take time.

- not being hit is almost impossible if you join all NPCs, so some damage is 99% likely

- abuse the Phobos and KM6, the idea is not only to kill enemies but to create havoc and make it easier for you and the NPCs to move and battle what is essential

- driving the Naegling in reverse isn't easy and you'll get a lot of weird camera views, so get used and try anyway, it's worth it

- you can expect a few slowdowns, especially when the Phobos, KM6 and Naegling rockets are all active simultaneously

If you succeed 25-33% of the time, it's a good success rate. This mission is hard (EDIT - OK not that hard after all). For comparison, I have a 99% success rate in Scorching on 4.1, and I do it there with inferior armor and weapons. Well the Epsilon isn't exactly an inferior weapon, is it 😋

UPDATE
I've come up with other possibly easier ways to solve this one:

2ND UPDATE
I thought it couldn't be more insane but it can:

Second strategy - Nix ZC and support or turret

Weapons:
Life Vendor ZD
Guard Post M3 or Zone Protector ZM
Power Post ZM or ZEXR-GUN
Powered Exoskeleton Nix ZC
Armor: 1000

The second way does not involve much movement. You'll stay near the start during all the missions. The advantages are:

- you'll have almost all crates in a small area

- more NPCs will survive

- the armor of the Nix is way beyond the "paper tissue made" Naegling

If you just want to use support equipment the 3 ones above are stellar. Choosing between Guard Post M3 or Zone Protector ZM is a matter of protection efficiency versus distance covered, either will work. The ZEXRs which are one of the best AR weapons will work in a stellar fashion here.

At the start just proceed to the front corner of the area where you spawn while collecting all 6 NPC squads. The 2 NPC Nixs will arrive roughly at the same time at their positions as you'll get there too.

It's difficult to support both NIXs. Although they won't be in exactly the same position in all runs, I seldom managed to support both. Only Zone Protector ZM will be able to do that. Supporting the left one is a better strategy as it's the one that will usually be more battered by enemies.

Install one of each support post near the corner (see video), if you have ZEXRs send them forward in an arc. Wait until you can summon Nix, staying within range of the Life Vendor is a good idea. When Nix arrives concentrate on the 3 deroys. Be extremely careful shooting the Nix's Shoulder Howitzer, if you hit a nearby enemy or NPC you'll likely kill most of the NPCs as this thing does 10k damage. After the deroys concentrate on the drones and cosmos. Do remember to summon more NIXs when you can this is crucial.

When the second wave comes, install a new Life Vendor. You don't have time to rebuild the Guard Post and you only have 3, so don't use one. Same with ZEXRs, they will be crucial on the third wave and wave 2 usually goes pretty fast so you wouldn't have time to use and rebuild them. The Life Vendor is enough on this phase. Kill as many bees as you can with the Nix Revolver and Missiles, handle Giant Bee when she's in range, leave pill bugs mostly to NPCs.

When the third wave comes install both support posts and the ZEXRs if you have them. Remember the tadpoles will do a circling flight but you should install them before they end it. The ZEXRs help a lot in this phase, they mince the tadpoles very efficiently. If possible handle the blue ones.

The fourth wave will not be very hard. Install the support posts and the likely ready ZEXRs. If the latter is not ready do exit Nix and install them when possible. they will help a lot in the initial onslaught. You now have 2 options. If you want the level done, kill queen ant, destroy huge anchor (do realize that the Shoulder Howitzer shots from one Nix won't be enough for the bugger pylon). Then starting from the right destroy each remaining pylon, the 2 rightmost ones will be the ones spawning bees which are the most troublesome for the NPCs. Each large pylon will go down with 5 Shoulder Howitzer hits. Leave the leftmost pylon alive which only spawns red and black ants and collect crates.

The alternative is to while killing any giant enemies that appear, destroy immediately the rightmost pylons that spawn bees, and then the second from left that spawns spiders (or all the smallest ones) and then keep killing the giant enemies that the huge pylon spawns. You'll be able to call a ton of NIXs, no problem there. A shoulder howitzer hit in a king spider will stun it for a while and send it flying across the map. The howitzer isn't good for the queen ant, advance towards her and use flamer and revolver she'll go down in a snap.

Usually, the NPC WDs and almost all rangers will be alive at the end. NPC fencers like to make inroads towards enemies and are crushed quickly.

Although the Nix ZC is slow as molasses, the crates will be in a small area compared to other strategies, making their pickup not a dreadful job.

Third strategy - Naegling and turrets

Weapons:

ZEXR-GUN
Bulge Laser Beam Mode Z
ZEX Launcher or ZE Blaster (if you want to use DLC weapons)
Naegling Self-Propelled Missile Launcher XEM
Armor: 1000

I was really surprised that this loadout is very successful. The ZEX Launcher is dangerous but it does work if you're careful with its placement. The Bulge Laser is essential for pylons but surprisingly works very well with the 3 deroys.

Easiest strategy overall

With so many possibilities which is the easiest way to do this mission? Although it's possible to do it in different ways 2 are easiest and more prone to success:

- Nix ZC, Life Vendor ZD, Guard Post M3 or Zone Protector ZM (one favors protection strength, the other area covered) and ZEXR, by staying in the start area. The Nix will do the majority of the job, but the ZEXRs can help a lot in waves 1, 3 and 4 and will maximize the number of NPCs that survive. My personal record stands at 11 NPCs alive at the end (none respawned).
You can farm infinitely the mission if you want with this loadout. Just don't destroy the big anchor and keep killing the spawned queen ants and king spiders. However take care that when there are only 3 pylons left the huge one will also spawn waves of 5 tadpoles, spiders and black ants, which your turrets, Nix machine guns and NPCs will handle with some ease anyway.

 - Naegling Self-Propelled Missile Launcher XEM, Bulge Laser Beam Mode Z, ZEX Launcher (or ZE Blaster if you want to go with DLC weapons) and ZEXR-GUN, by falling back, right and up. Amazingly the 2 turrets do provide the best solution if not staying near the start is the option. Although the ZEX Launcher is dangerous, using it with some thought does deliver the best way and a few times I even managed to have a few rangers alive at the end (not considering the ones that respawn), besides the fencers and the WDs.
